When I got my Tacoma, I replaced all the lights with LEDs which made a huge difference. I use the Curt break controller that I got from Hiker which works fine. I looked at other break controllers and they were just too expensive for my needs. I also just got air bags put on the back axel. I found when I loaded the bed full of camping gear and then hooking up the Hiker, I was not towing level so the air bags took care of that. See you guys at HTCE6.

You've added some nice, useful things. Those Coopers make a lot of sense. If possible, get rid of the ROAM case because it's made with a low-density polymer, similar to the material used in plastic shopping bags. The lids tend to warp after about one year and lose their ability to seal effectively. There are much better options for as much, or less, money. But, if that's not possible, protect the case as much as possible from UV and hot temperatures. I'd recommend steel rock sliders with a top plate and a bump out in front of the rear tire. Steel rock sliders will take abuse and can be used as a jacking point. That will serve you well. I'd also recommend heavier springs that will handle your load for camping as well as the occasional Costco run. To go along with that, shocks with remote reservoirs and separate high speed/low speed adjustments will serve you well. It might be best to do all four at once as that will offer the best results for improved handling. Depending on the total amount of weight, especially when towing, and since you have the Red Arc brake controller, you should consider upgrading your front brakes to a six-piston caliper along with their rotor. Wilwood makes great brake systems. Happy trails!

For suspension, the 4Runner is already capable on 90% of where you’ll use it. If you do a lift and suspension, it’ll hurt gas mileage and drive quality. For butt sag, use a pair of Firestone air bags. It works great on the 600# tongue weight of Curiosity, so would be perfect for you. When not towing you can reduce pressure to the 5 PSI minimum for a more compliant ride. Use individual valves. DO NOT combine both into one. For rock sliders, unless you really need them for function instead of looks, stick with the factory running boards. The boards offer better footing, especially with snow and ice, and don’t rust. The sliders I installed were slippery in any rain or snow, and needed paint every year. Don’t fall into the Bro Truck trap! 😂

Is the Hiker trailer fully insulated? I watched the build video episode 1, and they showed insulation in the ceiling, but it cut out after that, and they don't have a episode 2 as of yet, so I would really like to know if they also insulate the walls and floor?

Thanks for the suggestion of the Victory 4x4 Molle Panel system. I like the fact that the shelf is one piece. I’ve put that on my future mods list. I ended up going with Cali Raised LED for the dash mount, can see the clock and it had a sleeker look than 67Designs. Take care and happy trails!

Measuring to the fender well isn’t going to give you an accurate measurement for front to rear height leveling. Often the factory fender opening aren’t the same size and height due to the way the F&R suspensions articulate differently. Victory 4x4 makes great structurally built side rails and suspension, since they are local I would talk to them…

Nice job, especially not going overboard overlanding. Really like the rack on the inside and side windows. Great use of space.

Hi, Matt. Could you please share what is your gross trailer weight and tongue weight when fully loaded? I’m considering the MXL-510 as well.

They want $15K for a camper that has no frame or insulation??? Are they insane? I will be lucky if my roof doesn't cave in over time with my kayaks on them. I would NOT put a roof top tent on this and think that 3/4 inch plywood is strong enough to hold it. This is NOT a sturdy build at all. Even the hitch in the rear is cheap. This is a very cheap Wood Shell that's covered with an ultra thin layer of aluminum and trimmed out to make it look strong. I was going to buy one until I saw the real guts if this. For $5K you can build a much stronger and better trailer that will out last this.

Matt, do you have your Hiker set up for connecting both a battery and power center at the same time?

Replacing our nearly 15 year old screen house that had attached wind/rain screens. Got a lot of use out of it until high winds took the life out of it. Been studying Gazelle versus Clam products. I settled on the Gazelle G6 Deluxe about 1. 5 years ago. Went to purchase it from my wish list and it’s no longer available. So, I’ve had to go with the Clam Pavilion with attached wind/rain screens, much like the Gazelle. I’m so impressed by how well your Gazelle held up to 3 days of rain. I’m not sure the Clam will but will give it a try.

Hi Matt and Wendy. I just got my first Hiker this week. A 5x10 Mid Range and I LOVE IT! It came with a 23 Zero awning but I want to add a ROAM awning that I already had to the other side. The hardware that came with it doesn't work on the 1 inch square crossbars on the Hiker. Do you know if Hiker sells the required hardware or is it something I can pick up somewhere else? Thanks! Just ordered one of these as I really wanted the side wind screens attached and not a separate accessory. Not a cheap item so I’m hoping it will tolerate some Pacific Northwest rainy, cool weather. It arrives tomorrow and we have two September camp trips planned, so we’ll find out soon enough. Love the easy set up concept!

Have you done any mods to the 4runner to improve towing? How is the 4runner's MPG while towing the Hiker?

Those bacon wrapped pork fillet are awesome we have been smoking them on the smoker. Would love to find a hitch swing out mount for the EOR with rear tire mount to put a smoker on but will have to go without. At this point 3hrs at 210 is wonderful yummy! See you all at HTCE -6

Over in my neck of the woods. Paine is a nice falls in high water, the were a handful of nice falls within 10 min of Paine. Our metro parks does a nice job with Fairport Beach. And you visited Ash-ta-bula without seeing a covered bridge? Did not know that was possible 😂 Good to see you guys enjoyed NE Ohio. OH… IO… 😂

Is Stargazer more comfortable than Kilos Gear Grandpeak + with Kilos Gear Stool or is it opposite? What do you think? I really need to know before buying.

I use this. An application keeps water beading for 6 months, here in the PNW. It's very easy to apply. Leaves a high shine. I love it.

Great setup! That’s a nice place for the propane tank, but it should be mounted with bolts and lock nuts, not self tapping screws.

I bought a 3d printed adapter that goes to the Wave2 side that converts to rv sewage hose hook ups and also added a wye adapter to be able to run hoses to both front vents.

$579…and sold out on Gazelle’s website as of this writing. Before I invest, would you please share your experience with if it traps heat like folks report the regular G6 does? They also make a G6 with a mesh top and fly - but no awning or other features of the deluxe. Any insight on which way to go would be appreciated. I live in New England, where mosquitos and black flies are fierce, and it does get into mid-upper 90s in the peak of summer, but not into the 100s like other parts of the country. with our heavy forests, wind is less of an issue.

Best is meguires rubbing compound when dry. Wax as you dry turtle wax when washing with ceramic wash n wax. Mine shines like glass!

Dang, the main reason I am looking at one of these is rain protection. I swear this year I have not been able to go camping (I have a car set up, as do my two favorite camping buddies) without spending a couple of hours a day in the car waiting for the rain to stop. Spent two days in the Bighorns last week that included a 3 hour rain storm as well as an early night because the rain started around 8:30 PM and I just gave up and went to bed. Would love to have a shelter that 3-4 of us could hang out in till the rain passed, instead of each of us holed up in our car. I think I'm going to check out the shelter you mentioned having before you bought this one! Only thing is, I would also like something I can easily set up on my own, because I also camp solo. Would be nice to have it close to the door of my car that I get out of, for dressing etc. The search continues! Thank you for your honest review. You saved me some money for sure because this fails at the primary reason I want to buy one. Edit: I see some have waterproofed it themselves. At this price point, I don't want to have to fix the darned thing before I can use it. They're currently running about $400 give or take and essentially do 1 of the 3 things I am looking for. Nah.

Lots of ideas. I like the single bed set up - that will be ideal for me still leave room for my Lab on the fooor. If I buy one next week, I will research bed options

I will definitely visit this campground on the Leelanau Peninsula. I like the 270 awning. I will ask the folks at Hiker HQ how much weigh it adds. I need to keep the overall weight down.
